Guidelines

for using the IT infrastructure at the Institute of Computer Science

Overview

In general, information on our IT infrastructure is available at our web site http://www.cs.uni-bonn.de/dv . Additional guidelines regarding the computer usage at the new building (Neubau), particularly our computer pools, can be found at http://web.cs.uni-bonn.de/dv .

User account

Principally your user account – or login – permits access to all computers of our institute. Initially, your account is valid only at the central computer pools, see below. For all other computers the responsible divisions can activate your account if necessary. Attached to your account is a unique number, your User ID or UID. On a Unix system this ID can be obtained by using the command „id“. It is also the number printed on your first identification card.

Access control system

Your identification card (a card with a magnetic stripe) allows you to enter the following computer pools:

·          Old building (Altbau): A106, A227: Informatik III division

·          New building (Neubau): N101: Informatik IV division

·          New building (Neubau): N218, N222, N224: Central computer pools running Unix and Windows

Throughout weekdays you have access to rooms N 218, N 222, and N 224 between 8-21 o’clock. The admittance to all other rooms can be granted to you individually. In order to get broader access rights you must contact the divisions mentioned above.

Handling your ID card

A card reader is mounted next to each door. When pulling the identification card through the reading slot the information stored on the card will be read and, depending on your access rights, the door will open. Please enter the room swiftly and pay attention that no one unauthorized comes along with you. You can leave the room at any time without having to check out with your card. Normally the door should close automatically, but please make sure that the door snaps completely.

Of course you must not give away your identification card to anyone or enable unauthorized access to others. Needless to say the card must not be duplicated or manipulated in order to gain additional access rights. Please contact us immediately if you lose your card, damaged cards should be returned. Lost or damaged cards will be replaced, charging you with 4 Euro. Please make sure the deposit on your print account is sufficient so that the amount can be deducted.

References to the protection of privacy

Your Unix User ID (UID) is printed on the identification card. In addition to the UID the magnetic strip encompasses an encrypted card number, a status field (assistant, student, guest) and the expiration date. No other personal data is stored on the card.

By signing a delivery list when handing out the card you allow us the inquiry and storing of personal data gained by using the card. Every entrance is logged together with the card’s content described above. These are stored only for a subsequent check of access permissions or in case of a reasonable suspicion of abuse. Deletion will be carried out after an appropriate period. As far as statistics will be generated they contain no personal reference. You can revoke your acceptance to the storing of this data at any time. In this case the card is to be returned.

The entrance to the computer pools will be recorded with monitoring cameras.

Usage conditions

By applying for a user account you have agreed to the usage conditions of the Institute of Computer Science in its current version available at http://web.cs.uni-bonn.de/dv/Benutzungsordnung . In case of changes you will be informed via Email.

User data

Every user account owns a home directory which is available on all computers (with the exception of certain divisons’ laboratories). On this central directory you can store data which will be saved daily in backups and can be restored in case of emergency. Program-specific configuration files are also located there. The available space is limited by a quota. Additional information can be found at the institute’s web site as well.

Printing and print accounting

The usage of  printers is charged, every printout will be deducted from an internal print account. Payments to this account are only possible via wire transfer. The wire transfer form can be printed at three PCs in room N223 using the login name cash4lpr and entering your User ID. Alternatively, if you prefer not to use this form please make sure that your wire transfer includes your login name and your UID. Further information is available at the institute’s web site at http://www.cs.uni-bonn.de/dv/pac/ . A scale of charges per printed page for each of our printers can be found at the web page http://www.cs.uni-bonn.de/dv/pac/drucker-de.html .

Email

Along with your user account you receive a personal email address specific to our institute to which all official notes from the institute will be sent. It’s general form is loginname@cs.uni-bonn.de.

The institute’s mail service may only be used by secure and authenticated connections, either locally or from computers outside of the institute. Moreover, worldwide access to this mail service is also possible via a web browser at https://webmail.cs.uni-bonn.de. Our web site contains far more detailed information on this topic.

Remote login and VPN

Remote login to the institute’s local computers is only admitted indirectly by a secured connection (SSL) to the central login server „login.cs.uni-bonn.de“. This can also be used to exchange data stored in your home directory.

Furthermore you can get access by a VPN (virtual private network). This requires a separate account. You will find detailed information on this topic at http://web.cs.uni-bonn.de/DV/dienste/vpn/vpn.html

Wireless LAN (WLAN)

Wireless LAN is generally available but limited to certain areas in the building. Access is only possible by secure connections (IPsec) using the VPN infrastructure of our institute. Usage guidelines for WLAN and VPN are available at http://web.cs.uni-bonn.de/DV/dienste/wlan/wlan.html .

Help desk

You may contact our helpdesk via email to helpdesk@cs.uni-bonn.de.
